CHAPTER 15 / Moscow⦠A Turning Point
AS THE matches were wrapping up and the wrestling fans were celebrating at the Beat-the-Streets evening gala in New York City, several members of FILA and USA Wrestling were preparing to fly to Moscow. Once there, the schedule called for a FILA Bureau meeting on Friday afternoon and evening, May 17, leading up to the FILA Extraordinary Congress session with national federation delegates set for Saturday â and a potential showdown between Nenad Lalovic and Raphy Martinetti.
At stake was the leadership reigns to fill the unexpired term â until September 2014 â of FILA President.
Friday morning, just prior to the FILA Bureau meetings, Lalovic called a meeting of the FILA Executive Committee. Coincidentally it was reported, both Messrs Ayik of Turkey and Dziedzic of the USA mused that, since being appointed Vice-Presidents three years earlier, neither had ever been invited to such a meeting.
Lalovic wanted to discuss with his Vice-Presidents the proposed sequence of events on the Friday meeting agenda. He was not pleased with what he saw as a tactical move by Martinetti supporters to restore the deposed President to office. He asked the Executive Committee to approve a Bureau agenda modification whereby a review of the nominations received for the election of the FILA President be placed at the start of the meeting rather than towards the end. The Executive Committee agreed to support this strategic change.
At the Friday afternoon Bureau meeting at Moscowâs Hotel Metropol, Lalovic asked the Bureau members to approve the reshuffled agenda. Martinetti announced that he disagreed with this proposal. Lalovic called for a vote on his agenda modification. Twelve Bureau members agree to modify the agenda per Lalovicâs request, with just one vote against. The process of taking nominations for the Presidency would preceed all other business items.
